🎧 Listens: 2022

Looking for my next favorite album in record stores and on the Internet is one of my joys in life. This is my attempt at keeping track of every record I enjoyed over the years. I like to call it: La Discoteca.

💽 Disc-o-what?

In essence, you’ve stumbled upon my music journal…

🎵 Listened to Zappa - Zoot Allures (1976)

Zoot Allures

Zappa

1976 · prog rock

Some might be put off by the slow-tempo tunes and Zappa singing it down low, but the guitar riffs are wild and the bass lines as tight as you can get them. “The Torture Never Stops”, the title track and “Black Napkins” are the highlights.

2022 · art pop

It’s been documented how hard it is for artists to follow-up a masterpiece, but that wasn’t a problem for Natalie Mering. This record still lives in the movie-like world of Titanic Rising. Yes, it still delivers those hazy/silky tunes, it’s just no a novelty anymore. Nevertheless one of my favorite albums of the year. I’m curious on where Weyes Blood go from here.

Not a lot of activity this month. Mostly revisiting old favorites. Really looking forward to catching up with this year’s releases in December.

Not a lot time left this month to crank up many tunes. Here’s what October sounded like though.

The Confessions of Dr Dream and Other Stories

Kevin Ayers

1974 · prog rock

On The Confessions of Dr Dream and Other Stories, his 5th record, Kevin Ayers finds balance between the avant-garde experimentation of Shooting at the Moon and the pop sensibilities of Bananamour, while the later it’s considered for many his best album, it seems that up until this point in his career everything they guy works on turns gold.

The most pleasant surprise here is an appearance by the great Nico, a short and enigmatic cameo that ends up shaping the sound of the whole album. This is, perhaps, the collaboration that paves the way for the great concert of June 1, 1974 with friends John Cale and Brian Eno.

The eternally underrated Ollie Halsall also features on guitar, starting here the trip (and downfall) that would birth the Ayers scene The Fall sang about and eventually give us this gem from Spanish TV in the 80’s.
