I love Gospel music. At one point most of my vinyl collection were Gospel records.
“The Boatman’s Call” by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is one of my favorite albums ever and one of the few records that I consider absolutely flawless. It’s the album that includes “Brompton Oratory”, probably my favorite Gospel song by them.
Wild God is The Bad Seeds new album and Nick Cave’s full transition into a preacher man. Given the context, this should be revelatory for me. I welcome the change of tone, this is a joyful parade, a reflection of the complete Artist, if you will.
As a fan, it’s great to hear him happy after years of grief and personal experiences with family loss, but at the risk of sounding like the “Conversion”-police, “Wild God” feels ultimately like a show. “We’re moving ‘round the world!”, “have mercy on me, please?!” and “oh, touched by the flame!” and so on…
So much so I think “Song of the Lake” is secretly a “Hallelujah” cover.
The music is great, as always, the Bad Seeds deliver. I never thought I’d agree with people bothered by Cave’s singing, but it just didn’t click this time. I definitely liked this more when it was “Foi na cruz”.
