📚 Finished reading: Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano

When I first started this book I was fascinated and surprised that it is not obligatory reading in Latin-American schools. It describes some of the events that took place during colonial times which are so horrifying that to this day many right-wing extremists believe this to be a work of fiction. I was shocked to learn that it was actually banned in several countries for being a “communist book.” So it definitely earned its title as the Latino leftist bible.

Even though I lack the depth required to discuss some of the political economy ideas that the author raises, I still consider this obligatory reading for anyone interested in the history of the pillage of the continent. The historical facts it presents regarding the atrocities committed in the region by both colonialist and imperialist powers alone makes it worth reading.
